SkedGo wins Rio Olympics Challenge

In four months time, up to half-a-million of visitors will descend on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 31st Summer Olympics. After winning the Rio Olympics Transport Challenge, Sydney-based start-up SkedGo will serve their transport needs with trip planning app RioGo.

The customised app won the “Experience the Olympics” category. It is based on the award-winning technology behind established TripGo brand, which already has over 800.000 users in Australia and worldwide.

The contest is a cooperation with the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro and Viktoria Swedish ICT, a Swedish research institute. Using City Hall’s open data catalogue and SkedGo’s unique multi-modal routing technology, the Aussie start-up impressed the jury with their user-friendly and accurate application.

SkedGo’s specialist technology not only combines all available public and private transport methods into one trip, but also customises them according to the user’s preferences. Since RioGo knows all Olympic events, as well as tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants, users can simply nominate what they want to do. The app then creates a trip plan automatically and can adapt trip suggestions to tight schedules so users won’t run late for events.

“With RioGo we’ve faced the very interesting opportunity to go beyond trip planning and focus on the motivation behind those trips: experiencing the Olympics and getting to know the sights of Rio de Janeiro. This flips around the User Experience. The focus is on what the user wants to do, and we help them with how they get around the city, so that they can make the most of their time in Rio”, explains Adrian Schoenig, CTO and co-founder.

To date, worldwide mobile app downloads amount to approximately 100 billion and are expected to at least double in 2017. With millions of apps available in app stores, it is getting harder for start-ups to cut through the noise and reach customers. Winning the Olympics challenge provides an unparalleled showcase to the world for Australian tech expertise and innovative thinking.

Self-funded business SkedGo has carved out a successful niche by offering white label solutions to business partners such as Optus in Australia and Xerox in the US.

“Creating white labels allows us to offer our tech solutions to a larger audience and creates a revenue stream for the business. With RioGo we now have a substantial international award under our belt, which will help us grow globally”, says Claus von Hessberg.
